3 Ways to Use Activated Charcoal
Activated charcoal has become a staple for me in the past couple years. I probably use it in some way once a day! There are so many benefits of activated charcoal and so many ways to use it.
What is Activated Charcoal?
Activated Charcoal is derived from coconut shell, hardwood, bamboo, or coal. These substances are burned without oxygen to create a char and activated with high temperatures and certain gases to make it porous. A high quality activated charcoal will be tasteless and odorless. The one I use is made from coconut shell and there are so many fun ways to use it;
Detox Toxins and Aid Digestion
I occasionally use it to help my digestion when I’m feeling cramps or bloating from foods I’ve eaten that my body isn’t used to. Activated charcoal is one of the best GI tract decontaminants. It helps to bind and absorb 50-60% unwanted toxins and also excess gas. This can be especially helpful when traveling, especially if you’re visiting a country like Bali that is know for giving tourists Bali Belly (food poisoning)!
Take 1 - 1 1/2 tablespoons of activated charcoal between meals, up to 3 times a day or as your bottle recommends. Do not take within 2 hours of any vitamins or medications as it can prevent the body from absorbing them. Make sure to drink plenty of water if you decide to ingest activated charcoal to help the toxin or elimination process and stay hydrated.
Activated charcoal is also great for whitening teeth naturally, especially if you're a big coffee and tea drinker like me. Just add a little bit to your toothbrush or paste and brush normally for a couple minutes. (But be careful, it’s messy!) I also like Magic Mud toothpaste that already contains activated charcoal which makes it super convenient and a little less of a mess.
And when I’m looking for a little oomf in my beauty routine, I’ll mix it into a face mask and oh my is my skin feel smooth and detoxed after! Frank and Whit have a couple face masks that contain activated charcoal and I love using the Queen Village mask in my mini at home facial every week.
Where to Buy activated charcoal
Most health food stores stock activated charcoal now, but you can also find it online. My favorites are Magic Mud toothpaste, Schizandu Capsules, Frank and Whit face masks, and Terrasoul Superfoods powder.
Do not take activated charcoal within 2 hours of any vitamins or medications and remember to always speak with your doctor before ingesting activated charcoal.
